How to Get a Free Movie Script

Published by sara at 7:43 pm under Screen Writing

The best way to get a free movie script for your film is to write it yourself. There will be no worries about copyright  infringement or payments, and nobody is liable to chase after you slurring, “You stole my story!” like the guy in Secret Window.

But if you don’t have any screenwriting skills, you don’t have to sign up for a free screenwriting course to learn some–though that could be helpful. (You may also want to download some free screenwriting software to work with, too.)

You can secure a screenplay from a variety of sources. Do you have any creative relatives, friends or co-workers who write for a hobby? If they aren’t professional screenwriters already, they may find it a fun challenge to create a script for your film.

If you have a bit of money tucked back for the actual script, you can commission one of these people–or a writer you don’t know–to write one for you as well. You can place an ad in regular job boards, such as Craigslist, where writers are sure to check listings daily. You may want to request samples, price quotes, or other information. If you have a specific budget in mind, you might want to include that as well. You will likely need to set up a contract, too.

Searching for screenplays for sale is also possible. Many writers list their screenplays online–either at their own websites or at Craigslist, or at websites that sell only screenplays, such as Screenplay Shop. If you choose this option, keep in mind that authors may have a set price in mind that they may not wish to compromise.
