How to Get Cheap or Free Props for Your Movie
Whether you need a scepter for Satan or sash for Miss USA, you’re likely going to need props for your movie at some point. That said, you don’t want to spend a fortune on something that may only be in one scene–or that you’re only going to use for this one movie.
Luckily, there are plenty of ways to secure free or cheap props. If you break your budget, props should not be the reason why! Here are a few ideas.Make your own props. If you’re into woodworking, metal crafting, jewelry making or any other creative hobbies, you might be able to make your own props. There are also plenty of how-to videos online to teach you how to make specific props. Skip the papier mache, however, unless you really rock at it.
Use things around the house. If your film takes place in this dimension, chances are you’ll have some things you can already use. If not, your grandmother probably does. A little paint (if permissable) or added coverings like blankets or shawls might be all you need to transform some household junk into new movie props.
Use things from someone else’s house. If you need a rotatiller (think Untraceable) but don’t have one, maybe your neighbor does. Be sure to ask permission first.
Visit the junkyard. Flea markets, garage sales, and other cheap venues can also come in handy, especially if you’re making a piece requiring old-time stuff or torture devices. People’s garbage cans may also come in handy!
